About the Book

The value problem in epistemology is the problem of explaining why knowledge is more epistemically valuable than mere true belief. This dissertation offers a solution to the value problem that focuses on epistemic desert. Chapter 1 examines a variety of solutions that have been offered to the value problem. It argues that none of these solutions is adequate because they fail to either (a) genuinely account for the value of knowledge, (b) appeal to epistemic values that are strongly connected to true belief, or (c) offer an informative explanation of the value of knowledge. Chapter 2 offers a solution to the value problem that overcomes these deficiencies. Knowledge is more valuable than mere true belief because when a subject knows, that subject has a true belief and deserves to have that true belief. Since it is good to deserve true belief and it is good that there is fitness between having true belief and deserving true belief, knowledge is more valuable than mere true belief. Chapter 3 examines a further value that is associated with knowledge that explains why knowledge is more valuable than justified true belief. Knowledge is more valuable than justified true belief because when one knows, one has a true belief because one deserves to have true belief. Chapter 4 examines another value associated with knowledge. This value has to do with the comparative desert of true belief. It explains why knowledge is more valuable than what one has in a Fake Barn case. Knowledge manifests this value because knowledge is a fair success through virtue. Chapter 5 examines epistemic values that are associated with withholding. It argues that withholding is epistemically valuable if a subject withholds when they deserve to avoid error and miss success. That way, there is valuable fitness between what a subject has and what they deserve. Chapter 6 examines epistemic normativity and draws a distinction between epistemic value and intrinsic value.
