About the Book

One of the major challenges facing a mental health organization is measuring the recovery of its consumers. Various measures have been used in the past such as the Recovery Enhancing Environment, the Recovery Oriented System Indicators, the Recovery Self Assessment (Salyers et al., 2007), and the Recovery Assessment Scale (Andresen et al., 2006). Recovery measures currently being used are dependent on questionnaires completed by clinicians or consumers. However, none of the previous work explored the reports written by clinicians; these reports can be a significant source of information during the recovery process. This research proposes a novel methodology to investigate the relationship between recovery measures for consumers with mental illnesses and progress notes written by clinicians. The data used in this research are the progress notes written by therapists and psychiatrists at the Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD). These notes are written after each visit between a patient/consumer and a therapist or psychiatrist. In addition, there are a number of additional non-text variables associated with the patient, with the reports, and with the services a patient received which are used as exogenous variables. The research methodology in this work uses the vectors from a singular value decomposition of those narrative reports as inputs to both cluster analysis and regression analysis. Successfully addressing the relationship between the degree of consumer recovery, as measured using traditional approaches, and text written by clinicians will yield six outcomes. It will serve as a technique to provide an indicator of the topics discussed in groups of progress notes written by therapists and psychiatrists during the consumer recovery process, a tool to predict the recovery score of consumers for a reporting period, a feedback mechanism to help improve the skills and enhance the performance of clinicians/medical practitioners, a technique to investigate the projection of recovery scores across time, an early warning system for a clinician that would alert him/her as to whether the progress notes accurately reflects what s/he intended to convey, and a diagnostic tool for management at a mental health organization.
