About the Book

This dissertation identifies and describes how a rhetoric of deferral provided an otherwise unavailable option for ambitious women writers of high rank in Restoration and early eighteenth-century England who sought widespread renown without danger to their personal reputations. My three case-study authors are Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle; Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea; and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu; and while they each characterize the concept of delay differently, the idea of deferring certain aspects of their authorial projects gave each of these aristocrats a way of opening up a space for the respectable, public woman writer. In Chapter One, I analyze the models of female authorship that were available to the women in this study, and I explain why each of them was deemed inadequate to the particular needs of ambitious women who felt both the advantages and constraints of their high ranks. Beyond their social status, Cavendish, Finch, and Montagu shared literary aspirations that made them resist the typical class stance of the amateur, and eager to be recognized as important authors. Cavendish was one of the first English women to publish prolifically, and in Chapter Two I argue that she increasingly characterized her proper audience as a future readership rather than the present one. She used the vocabulary of materialism to naturalize her superiority to her current readers, hoping to convince them to ensure the perpetuation of her works until such time as she could be truly appreciated. In Chapter Three I analyze how Finch moves back and forth between various forms of manuscript circulation and print publication, periodically testing the waters of the literary marketplace. This strategy enabled her to build an increasing and admiring readership in the present, while claiming that she must hide for posterity her most provocative work during this benighted age. In Chapter Four, I explore how Montagu, whose strong sense of class-imperative induced her to publish only anonymously and pseudonymously while alive, developed an interest in seeking loopholes in the policy of restraint that governed her lifetime authorial choices. This culminated in ensuring that posthumous publication would bring her works to a wide audience at last.
