About the Book

Congregations should help congregants think theologically about moral issues. This dissertation develops a practical theology of how and why congregations should teach what I call "theological imagination"---the capacity to imaginatively use theological resources to respond to the moral challenges of modern society. This dissertation describes theological imagination and analyzes how it is practiced in the field. The goal of this project is to help congregations promote mature, rigorous theological reflection upon the challenges of modern life. I assess practices of theological imagination through an empirical study of four Presbyterian congregations. Three congregations do not explicitly teach or model a practice of Christian moral discernment. Fear of controversy and conflict limits the willingness of their congregational leaders to model and teach the use of theological imagination. I was surprised to find the conservative congregations were often quiet if not silent about moral issues. I expected moderate congregations to be reserved, but not conservative and liberal congregations. Many conservatives were only concerned with ethical issues when they encountered an issue in their own lives. Some believed thinking about moral situations distracted from their faith, which should be focused only on Christ. These congregations focus on the "journey inward" and neglect the "journey outward." The liberal congregations are concerned with making the world a better place for everyone---through advocacy, aid and education. Yet their congregants often report feeling spiritually weak and joyless. These congregations focus on the journey outward but neglect the journey inward. All the congregations I studied should work on the balance between these two aspects of faith. The normative framework from which I analyze Christian moral discernment and its role in congregational life draws on the Christian ethics of H. Richard Niebuhr and Paul Lehmann. I offer guidelines for congregations to follow so that they may model and teach the practice of theological imagination. Congregations should foster quality relationships, model moral discernment in a variety of settings, incorporate teaching moral discernment into the educational work of the congregation, and provide ample opportunities for practice.
