About the Book

This study explored the role of reflection in the personal life-coaching process and the ways it affects clients' change, as perceived by both coach and client. Underlying this study is that coaching is currently recognized as a learning process, yet how reflection is understood or used is currently unspecified. Insights gained from the adult learning domain inform its different manifestations in learning; critical reflection may facilitate transformative learning. Thirteen coaches and 16 clients were interviewed. Their perspective on the coaching process and the impact of reflection in the client's change was studied using basic interpretive qualitative research design. The interviews were analyzed, and six conclusions were formulated. First, simple reflection (noticing) and critical reflection (assessment, evaluation, or analysis) were found as active factors in the coaching process. Different types of reflection produce different types of processes or change. Findings are aligned with Mezirow's description of critical reflection in the context of transformative learning theory. Second, awareness was understood as noticing---becoming aware of one's own perspectives, assumptions, and premises. Third, conditions for a good coaching process were found to be flexible and dynamic, promoting a positive relationship and commitment to an authentic process. It is the interdependency between the three factors that generates optimal conditions for good coaching and learning. Fourth, the roles of both the coach and the client are recognized. Fifth, there are different types of changes in the coaching process from change as an action without reflection to meaningful change (perspective transformation) through critical reflection. Last, linear relationship between awareness and authenticity resulting in change was found. Practical recommendations for coaches and adult learning are made. Recommendations for further research in the areas of authenticity, connection of personal life-coaching with psychological theories such as Client-Centered Therapy, and the use of critical reflection to achieve meaningful change are made.
