About the Book

The purpose of this study was to understand pedagogy that strives to guide students toward college-level literacy practices and how key moments in professors' own literacy development can shape their commitments to teach towards this objective. Elements of study design and method included: observations of three classrooms over the course of one semester, multiple interviews with each of the three professors about their teaching practices and their own literacy development, ongoing interviews with students about their learning experiences, and analysis of course documents such as students' writing and instructional materials. The study's conceptual framework rested on the historic notion of liberal education as enhancing students' "flexibility of mind" through the reading of diverse texts, a common feature of the "liberal arts" component of the undergraduate curriculum. Key study findings include the following propositions: (1) Professors' reflections on their own past learning experiences -- and on the influence, on them as teachers, of guiding figures in their own literacy development -- can be useful resources on which to draw to create similar experiences for their students. (2) Professors can guide students to explore the relevance of literary and scholarly texts to their own personal lives while helping those students work toward more refined literary analysis, writing, and research practices. (3) Professors can frame student engagement as a shared experience rather than as a solitary activity that involves just one reader. (4) Professors can help students engage in literacy practices that are more advanced than those with which they entered the class by building on skills that the students developed earlier in their lives. The study concludes with considerations for future research on college students' literacy practices and on college instructors' pedagogies, along with insights into faculty development programs aimed at enhancing literacy instruction in college.
