About the Book

The cedar rust fungi (Gymnosporangium) are a group of highly host-specific obligate plant parasites. Like other rust fungi, they have complex life cycles that comprise up to five life stages, and most species alternate between two unrelated plant hosts. This study presents the first DNA sequence-based hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships in Gymnosporangium. A reconstruction of ancestral geographic ranges suggests that this group originated in the New World and made multiple transitions to the Old World. Host-switching appears to be more common than cospeciation, despite the restriction of Gymnosporangium to two major host plant clades (maloid Rosaceae and Cupressaceae). Two new gall-forming species are described: G. mexicanum and G. stylobatum. Including these species, a total of 15 Gymnosporangium species form abrupt telial galls on members of Juniperus section Sabina, and molecular phylogenetic analyses suggests that these gall-formers dominate a Glade that is nested well within Gymnosporangium. DNA sequence data also identify a possible alternate host for G. multiporum, the only species in North America for which the complete life cycle is unknown. Analysis of rust fossil descriptions indicates that the oldest fossils that can confidently be assigned to clades within the rusts date from the Eocene. The limited number and diversity of rust fossils suggest that they are underrepresented in the fossil record and that divergence time estimates based on these fossils would likely underestimate the ages of the major groups of rust fungi. Molecular phylogenetic results, along with morphological analyses and the inference of ancestral character states, indicate that the life stages described as uredinia for simplified species in the Gymnosporangium clade are not homologous to the uredinia of other rust fungi. Rather, they appear to have evolved from the displacement of the aecial life stage onto the telial host. Comparison of simplified life cycles within this Glade yields a picture of species in various stages of becoming asexual with a single dikaryotic life stage. While existing naming systems for rust life stages may be useful for identification purposes, a naming system based on phylogenetic relationships and homology would promote a better understanding of evolutionary processes in rust fungi.
