About the Book

I present continuous-wave NMR studies of superfluid 3He at 28.4 mT confined to three extremely low-density silica aerogels, with porosities of 99.8% (Sample 1), 99.6% (Sample 2) and 99.2% (Sample 3). All the samples are filled supercritically. I find that sample 1 shrank by about 30% radially and 10% axially, and sample 2 shrank by about 2% radially. The shrinkage most likely happened during the initial cool down. As a result, the actual porosities of these two samples became almost the same, around 99.6%. Later NMR measurements confirmed that sample 1 and sample 2 showed very similar NMR spectra and transition temperatures. In the two 99.6% samples, clear AB transitions are observed on both warming and cooling at pressures above 31 bar. At 33.9 bar, the highest pressure of our measurements, the B to A transition on warming occurs at 0.89 TC, Aerogel over a narrow temperature range of 20 pK. In contrast, no distinct B to A transition was seen in sample 3 on warming. By very slowly cooling down the cell, we created an A-B mixed phase in sample 3 at 1.6 mK. During the subsequent warm up, there is no change in the proportions of the A and B phases up to within K. 20 of T C, Aerogel, which indicates the AB interfacial pinning is very strongly in sample 3. It is consistent with Baumgardner's findings in 99.3% porosity aerogels. Recent experiments demonstrate that, in uniaxially compressed aerogels, the orbital order parameter vector 1 DEGREES in the A-like phase is oriented along the direction of compression. In our experiment, since sample 1 and sample 2 shrink more radially than axially, the texture of the 1 DEGREES-vector is expected to be a radial distribution within the horizontal plane, which is normal to the axes of the samples. The measured NMR spectra show strong evidence of such a texture. Finally, by comparing the maximum frequency shifts of the A-like phase in aerogel with bulk A phase, we obtain the order parameter suppression. We find in all three samples the suppression of the order parameter is higher than the suppression of TC, consistent with the studies on aerogels with 98% porosity.
