About the Book

Stream ecosystems experience frequent natural disturbance from droughts and floods, and are also undergoing considerable anthropogenic disturbance as a result of dam construction, water withdrawal, stream channelization, and pollution. Disturbance, especially to the hydrological regime, is viewed as the process most important for structuring communities and ecosystem functioning in streams. I explored the ecological impacts of two types of disturbance on stream communities: an influx of marine-derived nutrients and lowered flow. Anadromous alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) contribute a pulse of nutrients to coastal streams during their spawning migration. On average, 1050g of nitrogen and 120g of phosphorus are added to Bride Brook, CT through excretion and mortality each year. Natural abundance stable isotope analyses indicate that this influx of marine-derived nitrogen was rapidly incorporated by stream periphyton and was then transferred up the stream food web. There was no significant effect of this nutrient influx on ecosystem level functions such as water chemistry, leaf decomposition, or periphyton accrual. To explore the impacts of a low flow disturbance, I experimentally manipulated stream flow using weirs and water diversion over three summers. Stream community effects were only apparent at very low flow levels and responses were habitat dependent. In riffle habitats, there was no effect on aquatic insect family richness, but family diversity increased due to the decreased density of dominant families. In contrast, pool habitats saw no shift in insect family richness, diversity, or dominance. The susceptibility of aquatic insects varied between families and trait groups; some showed large shifts in density and size structure, but others showed no response. Highly susceptible organisms included those with limited mobility, a strong preference for riffle habitats, and a collector-filterer feeding mode. In addition, I tested the impact of this low flow disturbance on food-chain length and examined the effects for resource availability, resource quality, and associated ecosystem functions. I saw few shifts in these measures as a result of lowered flow and suggest that habitat heterogeneity and food web complexity buffer the effect of low flow disturbance on food-chain length and stream ecosystem functioning.
