This dissertation presents a 52-month longitudinal case study of a 3:6-7:9-year-old Korean learner of English as a second language (L2) who was still developing her first language (L1) when she arrived in the United States. Focusing on negation, plural, and possessive marking, data were examined to determine (1) whether manifestations of cross-linguistic influence (CLI), as a possible factor in deviations from universal developmental patterns, occurred in the participant's L1 and L2, and if so, how; and (2) the extent to which such manifestations may have interacted with changes in her L1/L2 dominance. Naturalistic data were collected from a variety of settings and elicited data were added after month 23 of the study to corroborate the evidence of CLI in naturalistic speech. The participant's naturalistic production data were analyzed for stages in the development of the selected linguistic features. Next, manifestations of CLI were identified and validated (1) by comparing the subject's L1 and L2 speech, and (2) by comparing her L1/L2 data with relevant results reported in published studies of L2 English learners whose L1s were typologically similar to and distinct from that of the participant. Manifestations of CLI were found in the rate, order, and sequence of acquisition of the three selected features. In examining the distribution of transfer from Korean to English and from English to Korean, the study identified a relationship between changes in the direction of transfer and changes in the relative dominance of the participant's L1 and L2. Specifically, transfer from Korean to English occurred at the early stage of learning, when L1 Korean was dominant, followed, gradually, by the reverse direction of transfer. This pattern of transfer appears to arise from the waxing and waning of the child's L1 and L2 and thus illuminates the dynamic character of child second language acquisition.
