About the Book

Eysenbach (2000) described the emergence of e-health as the study of consumer informatics, a branch of medical informatics, involving the exploration of the health care information needs of consumers, providing them with access to health information and integrating their preferences into medical information systems. The significant role of e-health, connecting health care providers to the consumers and how care may be delivered and received in the future leads to the research topic, consumer Internet usage and their preferences. This thesis uncovered components that appear to be important to individuals wanting to manage and cope with their disease by searching the Internet. Four components emerged from the study of the literature and analyzing focus groups of individuals with different chronic diseases. This thesis continues with original research based on three specific aims: (a) Measuring four components of managing and coping with a chronic condition including: knowledge, socialization, disease management tools and resources. (b) Creating a valid survey based on the four components and; (c) measuring the importance of these four categories within groups of individuals with the same chronic disease and between groups of individuals with various chronic diseases. The approach to this inquiry included a mix method of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. A three phase study was employed. Experiment (1) an analysis of focus groups, a qualitative study, to develop a survey instrument; Experiment (2) a validation study to validate the questionnaire; and Experiment (3) a questionnaire to measure the discrimination of groups. A significant result from this study is the suggestion that individuals with chronic diseases, when searching the Internet to help them cope with and manage their disease, search among the categories: knowledge, socialization, resources and disease management. The findings supported the assumption that these four categories are viewed as important among groups of individuals with different chronic diseases. Finally, a valid survey instrument to measure the importance or preferences for these categories was developed.
