About the Book

A basic interpretive qualitative research design was used to explore the experiences of hospital chaplains. Six hospital chaplains from two public hospitals in the Midwest constituted the sample population. This study was premised upon two central research questions: (a) how does religion/spirituality serve to mediate meaning thereby providing a contextual orientation for hospital chaplains as they experience hospital ministry, and (b) what religious coping strategies do hospital chaplains report using to help them personally cope with the stresses of hospital ministry. This was followed by three corollary research questions: (a) how and in what ways does the chaplain's religion/spirituality influence his or her religious coping strategies, (b) how has hospital ministry challenged and/or strengthened the religion/spirituality of the individual chaplains, and (c) are there common themes reported by hospital chaplains as to why they chose this particular ministry. The first research question generated six themes: (a) relationship with God, (b) ministerial self-understanding, (c) ministerial focus, (d) view of suffering and sickness, (e) acceptance of self and others, and (f) valued personality traits. The second research question yielded eight religious coping strategies: (a) reframing, (b) interpersonal religious support, (c) forgiveness, (d) prayer, (e) acceptance of self, (f) religious experience, (g) surrendering to God's Will, and (h) self-care strategies. The first corollary research question determined that religion/spirituality not only provided the chaplains with a clear sense of purpose, context, and meaning but also a particular set of coping strategies upon which they could draw. The second corollary research question resulted in three themes: (a) challenges to the orienting system, (b) validation of the orienting system, and (c) changes to the chaplains' religion/spirituality. The third corollary question provided the final three themes: (a) life and career circumstances, (b) God writes straight with crooked lines, and (c) the experience of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). The study's findings were discussed and recommendations for further study were also presented. Further research exploring the personality traits as well as the spiritual intelligence of chaplains and clergy in general was suggested.
