About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1830 edition. Excerpt: ...to this theory so far as it regards the generation of animal heat as a mere chemical process. When respiration is artificially kept pp, after decapitation of an animal, the changes in the air go on as before, and the colour of the blood is altered, but no heat is generated in this way--nay, the'body cools more rapidly (by evaporation doubtless) than if left uhdisturbed. The powers of resistance to the effects of changes of tem-perature are really wonderful in degree. De la Roche, Blag-den, Tillet, Martinez, 'r exposed themselves to temperatures nearly or quite as high as 250 to 300 of Fahrenheit, re-maining thus while meats were baking, _water boiling, &c. They sweated freely and lost a notable amount of the weight of their bodies. In PaI: ry's voyages we read of the Esqui-maux living in huts built of masses of snow, and lighted by windows of ice, while the thermometer was 30 and 40 be-low zero. ' It is usual to treat in this connection of the several phenomena of Laughing, Crying, Sighing, Yawning, &c. L Capacity is the property of absorbing heatand rendering it latent. This latent heat may afterwards become free and be given out under a. change of circuinstances. Thus one pound of water condensed from steam will add 11 of heat to 100 pounds of water at 50 (Fahr.) one pound of boiling water will add 11 of heat to no more than 13$ pounds of 'water at 50. Steam therefore contains seven times as much heat as boiling water, but it raises the thermometer no higher--the point 212 being common to both. All the surplus caloric then in steam is latent or combined. Again. Water in becoming ice gives out, it is calculated, not less than 140. The whole amount of caloric in water at 32 is estimated at 1400, of which...
