Little dependence can be placed upon the carriers upon railroads for the requisite care fowls ought to hove while thus journeying, and therefore the grain should be deposited where they can get it without troubling the expressman with what he has no leisure (and few the inclination) to attend to. If the water-cup is in sight, they will be furnished with drink occasionally, however. If the food is placed in the boxes or hoppers at the side of the cages, the chickens will find it readily. But the neglect to provide these simple conveniences and necessities for their comfort is too common, and ought never to occur. Upon the receipt of birds after a long journey, care should be had in feeding for a few days, anyway. Soft food, cooked, may be given them at this time to best advantage--not too much at a time, but three or four times a day for a week. Thus the digestive powers are re-organized, and gorging is avoided. A free run upon the grass-plot when taken from their cages is a very good thing, or chopped green food in cold weather. The chief object in the suggestions in this article is to advise that humane thoughtfulness be exercised by shippers, to render their fowls as comfortable as possible during their temporary and often prolonged confinement in transporting, with a view to their good, as well as the credit of the breeder.
