About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1853 edition. Excerpt: ...the liquid chalk. Such specimens as those however, have not the newness in appearance of a recent fall--are never found quite hot--show evident, indubitable marks of age; and are the very stepping stones whereon conviction mounts unto the footstool of the Deity, who has constructed them and worlds of similar materials. "Not knowing who you otherwise may be, I shall reply to your pencil observations on my memoirs in the Mechanics' Magazine simply as to the secretary and responsible representative of the Royal Society. For the statements made therein coupled with the book, --on one part or the other, --must either be a subterfuge, a falsehood, or a libel. As I conclude you are incapable of using any verbal form which involves a wilfully mendacious statement, I suppose you mean to your knowledge those memoirs never were communicated to that body? But I must plainly tell you I still possess Mr. Children's original letter (and his caligraphy (?) is not to be mistaken) bearing the seal of the society, acknowledging their receipt in 1835. That by command I saw the Duke of Sussex twice upon the subject in Mr. Children's presence. And at my last interview with Mr. Children in January 1851, having occasion then to call him as a witness on subpoena, he saw that letter and admitted it. Together with the fact of having introduced me to the Duke of Sussex by his royal highness' desire, and stated the original MS. of those memoirs would be found among the papers in the office at Somerset House. As Mr. Children on that occasion likewise invited me to visit him, I have by this post written to him on the subject of the memoirs. I must also now request you to inform me plainly if you have searched among the papers (1835) prior to making such a statement?...
