This operation can now be reckoned as one of the achievements of the present century, and the honour of priority of successfully tapping the pericardium must be ascribed to Romero (? Remero) of Barcelona, in 1819, who operated upon three cases, two of which recovered. (Of. Dr. S. West's valuable paper upon "Purulent Pericarditis," Med.-Char. Trcma, lxvi., 1883, p. 235). The operation has now been performed in about 100 cases, and Dr. Austin Meldon lately read an interesting paper before the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (November, 1896) in which he relates two successful cases from his own PI'8.Cbi.C8.' Out of the 100 cases only once has the operation proved fatal. An important difference in treatment arises according as the pericardial fluid is found to be serous or purulent. In the former case, simple removal of the fluid once may be all that is required; in the latter case, removal must be followed up by suitable provision for subsequent drainage. Heroes of Medicine.
