About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ...and 44. Indexing for Unequal Divisions When cases arise in which it is desirable to space the teeth of reamers so that no two teeth are diametrically opposite, it is necessary to divide the periphery of the work into a number of unequal parts. For this purpose, the plain method of indexing is adopted. When calculating the number of turns of the index handle per tooth space, the best plan to adopt is either to find the angle in degrees subtended at the centre of the circle by each space, or to adopt, initially, a value for each such angle. Then, if 6 equals the angle, the number of turns of the indexing handle equals Let 9 = 36; then 5'?" = 4 = the number of turns of the handle for that space. In adopting this plan, care should be taken to see that the sum of all the angles calculated or chosen for the whole circle equals 360. Automatic Indexing Apparatus The automatic indexing arrangement illustrated at Fig. 84 is built in such a manner that it can be used on any machine fitted with a dividing head, provided the measurements df the machine correspond approximately with those of the apparatus. It is a very valuable accessory to any universal milling machine, as it operates (the table feed having been once adjusted) the reverse and accelerated return of the table, as well as the indexing, automatically, quickly, and without error. The time necessary for completing a job is thus reduced to a mini. mum and in addition, it is possible for one operator to look after a number of machines. _ The apparatus is driven by means of a belt from a countershaft, a belt tightener being supplied with the apparatus. The change gears, otherwise only used for cutting spirals, are used for the feed of the table which is controlled from the indexing...
