Der Pfarrer erinnerte sich Onnes Gefahrts, diesen Weg musste sie gekommen sein, und er beschloss ihm nachzugehn. Die Sonne, die nun verhangen war, hatte ihren Hohepunkt am Himmel erreicht, so dass es gegen Mittag sein mochte. Geroms Ansiedlung lag eine Stunde vom Weg entfernt, und der Pfarrer hoffte, sie in diesem Zeitraum erreichen zu konnen. Der Waldpfad wand sich durch Dickicht und uber Sumpfe dahin, zuweilen hart am Rand eines Flusses durchs Schilf, dies musste der Gurdelbach sein. Onnes Behausung lag schon hinter ihm, sie war ihm entgangen, wie den meisten, die das Moor betraten, ehe der Herbst es gelichtet hatte. Dem Schreitenden war zumut, als drange er mehr und mehr in die Bereiche einer ganz neuen Welt vor. So mag es von Ursprung her auf der Erde gewesen sein, dachte er. Es bedrangte ihn eine Scheu, die ihm zuweilen den freien Atem benahm, und er furchtete sich vor dem Gerausch seiner Schritte. Der Weg fuhrte uber eine morsche Holzbrucke, die ohne Gelander und grob gefugt war, jenseits in einen Tannenwald. Im roten Dammerlicht zwischen den alten Stammen, die sehr dicht standen, vernahm er auf dem Nadelteppich den Klang seines Fusses nicht mehr. Es war totenstill umher, auf dem Boden wuchs kein Halmchen, alles schien in der Grabesruhe erstorben zu sein, die herrschte. Hier und dort hatte ein scharlachrot leuchtender Pilz sich aus dem Nadelteppich erhoben. Es kam ein Birkenwald, dessen weissliches Moderlicht unwirklich glomm nach der dunklen Versunkenheit der Tannennacht. Ihm kam dieser Schein wie jenes tote Leuchten vor, das er aus seiner Knabenzeit kannte, wenn er, lange im Sonnenschein liegend, die Augen geschlossen hatte und sie dann offnete.
