Uittreksel: ...zien, evenmin moet ge u voorstellen, dat, bij voorbeeld, de paarden van het Parthenon nu inderdaad getrouw gevolgd zijn naar die, welke in de straten van Athene te zien waren. Eer wij deze zaal verlaten, staan wij nog even stil voor een merkwaardig bas-relief, eene Reiniging voorstellende: eene godsdienstige handeling, die de Romeinen waarschijnlijk van de Etrusken hadden overgenomen en die blijkbaar verwant is aan soortgelijke gebruiken bij de Semitische volken, met name bij de Joden. Deze reiniging of zuivering geschiedde door middel van water, vuur of reukwerk; niet alleen de vrouwen, na hare bevalling, maar ook de dieren, die jongen geworpen hadden, werden, evenals deze jongen zelf, op deze wijze gereinigd. Men besprengde hen met gewijd water, terwijl welriekende kruiden, met zwavel gemengd, werden gebrand; de herders gingen driemaal in plechtigen omgang rondom de schaapskooi en offerden vervolgens aan Pales wijn, zuivere melk en een koek van gerst. Ons bas-relief stelt nu de zuivering voor van eene jonge koe, die haar kalf zoogt: een even fraai als zeldzaam kunstwerk. Men ziet den tempel en zijne omwalling, de gewijde fontein onder den boom, het watervat en den kwispel: een olijftak; aan den staf van den herder hangen twee ganzen, zijne offergave. Terwijl alles zich voor de plechtige handeling gereed maakt, steekt de koe rustig haar kop in het watervat en lescht haar dorst met het gewijde vocht. Het geheele, echt landelijke tafereel maakt een hoogst weldadigen, verkwikkenden indruk: het is als eene episode uit Homerus, in marmer gebeiteld. Bladzijde 177 De Sixtijnsche kapel: de Ignudi. VII.
