En inderdaad, gebeeldhouwd op den wand met uitstekende fijnheid, zag ik er alle mogelijke planten, een complete verzameling, een echte tuinbouwtentoonstelling. Het is te begrijpen, dat alle dieven uit Egypte, alle wederverkoopers van valsche of gestolen oudheden erop uit zijn, de in Karnak ontdekte voorwerpen machtig te worden, en het is geen gemakkelijke zaak, alle arbeiders te bewaken, die er bezig zijn. Het vorige jaar hadden dieven samengespannen met enkele der bewakers en hadden des nachts een gat gemaakt in den muur van het kantoor van den heer Legrain, waarna ze twee beelden van groote waarde stalen, die echter na duizenderlei moeilijkheden teruggevonden werden. Ik raad de toeristen aan, alle verkoopers van antiquiteiten te wantrouwen. Een van hen houdt er een eigenaardige manier op na. Hij is een consul van een of ander land te Luxor en noodigt rijke vreemdelingen op een arabischen maaltijd. Bij het dessert klinkt de schel aan de poort, en de bedienden doen de mededeeling, dat er inboorlingen zijn, die merkwaardige oudheden...
