Uittreksel: ...is den eenvoudigen Zaankanter vreemd. Zijne pronkkamer bevat voor eene zeer aanzienlijke waarde; maar de pronkkamers van zijne bekenden en buren zien er nagenoeg evenzoo uit: het is dus ten eenemale overbodig, die kostbare zaken aan elkander te laten kijken; ieder weet, dat het in een deftig zaanlandsch huis alzoo behoort. Om den eigenaar van het huis in zijne gewone omgeving te leeren kennen, moeten wij hem dus volgen naar zijne huiskamer, die op den tuin en verder op de rivier uitziet. Ook deze huiskamer is een ruim vertrek, laag van verdieping; de vloer is met matten belegd, en de wanden zijn, boven de eikenhouten lambrizeering, met linnen behangsel bekleed, waarop gezichten aan de Zaan en tafereelen uit het bedrijf der Groenlandvaarders zijn geschilderd. De eikenhouten stoelen en tafels zijn meer soliede dan sierlijk; de laatsten zijn in den regel beschilderd, gelijk trouwens schier zonder uitzondering alle meubelen en alle voorwerpen van huiselijk en dagelijksch gebruik met snij- en schilderwerk, met opschriften, namen, rijmpjes zijn versierd. Op kunstwaarde kan die versiering in verreweg de meeste gevallen weinig of geen aanspraak maken; ook geeft zij ons niet altijd een hoog denkbeeld van den smaak des eigenaars, maar toch verdient zij ten volle onze aandacht, omdat zij ons vergunt een blik te werpen op eene zeer eigenaardige zijde van het leven onzer vaderen. Die behoefte om het huisraad en de voorwerpen, die ons dagelijks omgeven, aldus te doen spreken, tot getuigen, in zekeren zin tot deelgenooten te maken van ons persoonlijk leven, is ons ten eenemale vreemd geworden. Zij onder ons, die reeds de grenzen van den middelbaren leeftijd beginnen te naderen, herinneren zich nog wel de heilwenschen en beden op kopjes, borden en dergelijken, voor geschenken bestemd; maar ook deze flauwe echo van het verleden is weggestorven. Onze meubelen, onze huiselijke gereedschappen mogen sierlijker en vooral schitterender zijn dan vroeger, zij missen ten...
