Remarquons la liberte grande que Gluck a prise dans ce passage, comme dans beaucoup d'autres, de se moquer de la carrure et meme de la symetrie; ce prestissimo est compose de cinq membres de phrase de cinq mesures chacun et de quatre mesures en plus. Et cette succession irreguliere, loin de choquer, saisit de prime abord et entraine l'auditeur. Pour bien rendre cet air, il faut en outre que les mouvements en soient saisis avec sagacite au debut, ou se fait sentir une certaine majeste sombre, et bien delicatement modifies ensuite, pour la derniere et si touchante melodie: Mourir pour ce qu'on aime est un trop doux effort, Une vertu si naturelle! dont chaque mesure tire larmes et sang. De plus, il faut absolument que l'orchestre soit inspire comme la cantatrice, que les forte soient terribles, les piano tantot menacants...
