Uittreksel: ...altijd weer wat nieuws wou, en altijd wat aan te merken had!.... Zij deed kleurige verhalen, van hoe een vroolijke en gezellige man "meneer" was geweest, voor zijn betrekking en al zijn zorgen hem zoo in z'n zenuwen hadden aangepakt. Daar moest ze nou toch geduld mee hebben, niewaar? 't Was zijn schuld niet. Vroeger, in 't huis op de Turfgracht, hadden ze kostjongens gehad, maar dat kon hij heelemaal niet harden. En zoo ging het.... op school moest ie zich goedhouden en dan, thuis, liet ie zich gaan.... Met haar ouwelijk hoofdknikken femelde het kind iets van: ja, zoo waren de mannen....; maar zij begreep best, wat de Juffrouw vertelde, en zij zag meester Jonkers weer met vriendelijker oogen aan. Dan, altijd, op 't laatst van den avond, kwam voor Sprotje het heerlijkste oogenblik van den dag: voor dat meneer en de meisjes binnenkwamen, moest Wilmpje geholpen. Overdag had ze nooit veel tijd om daar bij te zijn; nu mocht ze de versche luier warmen, terwijl de Juffrouw hem op zijn potje zette; ze keek toe, hoe het kindje soezebollend tegen zijn moeder aanzat, tot eindelijk, even maar, er iets tinkelde, en met een diep-zacht zuchtje hij zich neer liet leggen, en al weer sliep, als, werktuigelijk, hij zijn bleeke mollige beentjes nog omhoog stak voor 't verluieren. Soms, als ook het pak onderleggers vocht was-wanneer zou dat kind toch eens zindelijk zijn! klaagde vaak de Juffrouw, Christientje was 't al met de elf maanden geweest!-dan mocht Sprotje hem op schoot houden, terwijl de moeder het bedje voorzag. Ze oogde neer op zijn weeke wangetje, warm rood van 't slapen, en daarover heen zag ze zijn malsche halsje in, zoel binnen het flanellen nachtpon-kraagje; zijn witte voetjes borg ze in den wollen doek, die juffrouw Jonkers over haar te koude schort had gelegd, en met haar gezicht dicht op zijn wit-vlassen haartje, in haar gebogen moedertjeshouding, rook ze een heerlijk zoet-zwoel luchtje....-Net of 't van een diertje was, dacht...
