Vor allen Dingen galt es, diesen Dampfbehalter den zahlreichen, in der Umgebung von Barenswil und weiter im Land herum verstreuten Fabriken und mechanischen Werkstatten anzupreisen, womit man einen ganz hubschen Gewinn zu erzielen hoffte. Der Gehulfe faltete bis zur Mittagsessenszeit diese Papiere zusammen, welche Arbeit fur ihn etwas geradezu Frohliches und Gedankenforderndes enthielt, und ging dann zu Tisch. Man schwieg wahrend des Essens, abgesehen von Dora, die ihren reizenden Mund nicht zu halten vermochte. Die Knaben erwiesen sich unartig. Frau Tobler klagte die langen Schul-Ferien als die Ursache der allgemeinen Jugendverwilderung an, indem sie sagte, sie sei wahrhaftig froh uber den baldigen Wiederbeginn der Schulzeit, es werde nun gottlob bald wieder eine andere Zeit fur die Schlingel herantreten. Die Autoritat und das Meerrohr des Lehrers 197 wurden dann vielleicht erreichen, was der Mutter nicht moglich sei: artiges und aufmerksames Benehmen ihren Buben anzugewohnen. Es sei ganz gut, wenn es allmahlich Herbst werde. Wahrend dieser langen, schonen Sommertage wisse das kleine Volk vor lauter Langeweile gar nicht mehr, wo noch irgend eine Gelegenheit sei, Ubles und Dummes anzustellen. Bei dem Wort Herbst fuhlte sich Joseph in der Seele betroffen. Der schone Herbst! dachte er. Einen Augenblick spater war er mit Essen fertig geworden, er stand auf und sagte zu Frau Tobler, es fehle ihm Geld, um Briefmarken kaufen zu konnen. Die dadurch unangenehm beruhrte Frau sagte, so solle sie auch noch fur solche Dinge sorgen, seufzte und handigte dem Angestellten das Gewunschte schmollend, aber zugleich ein wenig geschmeichelt, ein. Man musste also zu ihr, der Frau, kommen, um Markengeld zu erwischen und zu ergattern. Joseph spielte wiederum ein wenig den Beleidigten. Schliesslich war er ein Mannesuntergebener, nicht ein Frauengehulfe. Wie lastig das war, jedes Zweimarkstuck einem.
