In quella vece, aveva trovato delle isole abitate da selvaggi, ignudi la piu parte come Adamo ed Eva innanzi il peccato. Guanahani, Cuba, Haiti e via discorrendo, potevano esser considerate altrettante aiuole del Paradiso terrestre. Ma questo ai re Cattolici di Spagna sarebbe parso troppo poco guadagno, in compenso al grandissimo sforzo che avevano fatto, di concedere tre gusci di noce per mandare a scoprire il Cattaio, e far vassallo di Castiglia il gran Cane dei Tartari! Percio l'almirante del mare Oceano giustamente pensava che nulla avrebbe operato sull'animo de' suoi signori, meglio della vista dell'oro. Che importava piu del gran Cane e del suo Cattaio, se si metteva la mano sulle miniere di Ofir? Isole ricche d'oro nativo, meglio trovarle selvagge, che abitate da popoli numerosi, governati da re potenti, forse disposti a trafficare, ma niente affatto a ricevere un nuovo padrone. Conosciuto per tal modo il desiderio del suo ospite, Guacanagari fu molto lieto di potergli dire che a poca distanza dalle sue terre, nella regione piu montuosa dell'isola, il metallo dal colore del sole era tanto facile a ritrovare, che gli abitanti non ne facevano stima veruna. Il luogo, soggiungeva egli, si chiamava Cibao. Non forse Cipango? penso tosto l'almirante. Ma fosse Cipango, o non fosse, egli aveva finalmente trovato Cibao, la misteriosa regione aurifera, di cui gli avevano gia detto nome i naturali di Guanahani e di Cuba. Guacanagari pranzo quel giorno con l'almirante, a bordo della Nina; e quindi lo invito alla sua residenza, dove gli avrebbe fatto vedere come fossero tutte le cose di lui gelosamente custodite.
