Excerpt: ... so far as the Spaniards were concerned, and was well aware how little dependence he could place upon any co-operation with their armies: but pressed by the British plenipotentiaries with the Spanish authorities, to make a diversion in the north of Spain, which should give time to the Spanish troops to rally behind the Tagus, and to Madrid itself (the fall of which was not yet known) to emulate the example of Zaragoza, Moore continued to move forward against Soult, though he somewhat changed his line of operations, avoiding Valladolid in his endeavour, in accordance with the third principle of war, to act upon the communications of the enemy by an advance on Burgos. By this change of direction he also facilitated a junction with some troops under Sir David Baird, from Corunna. On the 20th December he reached Sahagun, and fought and won a dashing cavalry action near that place. Soult, surprised by this vigorous initiative, was forced to quit Valladolid and to take up a position at Saldana, for the defence of the line of the river Carrion. If Moore had had only the army of the Duke of Dalmatia and the French troops on the same line of operation to contend with, his strategy must have been deemed good; and certainly it is difficult to conceive how in his efforts to assist the Spaniards, the latter did not keep him better informed as to the state of affairs at Madrid. Such however was the case, and it was notuntil the 24th December, that Moore became aware that whilst Soult was retreating before him to Burgos, he was doing so in accordance with the orders of the Emperor, whowas himself advancing from Madrid to intercept the line of communication of the English general, and to cut him off from his base.
