About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ...inclusive, were formed from 3 inch lap welded wrought iron or steel pipe bent to the proper curvature, the ends threaded to receive standard screw flanges. Bends Nos. 5 to 8, inclusive, are commercial cast iron flanged bends. Bend No. 9 is a standard long turn, cast iron drainage elbow, and Bend No. 10 is a standard, short-turn, cast iron drainage elbow. Both No. 9 and No. 10 are standard fittings for screw connection. Drawings of the various elbows are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Measurements The internal diameters of the bends were practically the same as those of the straight pipe. The diameters were obtained by carefully calipering each end of each pipe on at least four diameters, and taking the mean as the diameter of that pipe. The diameter of the pipe might and probably does vary somewhat in its length, and it was thought that it would be a fair assumption to average all diameters as measured on the ends of the pipes and use this value as the average diameter of the whole pipe line. The various properties of Bends Nos. 1 and 2 were measured direct; those of the rest of the bends were obtained by computation from two separate measurements in combination with the catalog data. The two computations checked closely and the average value was taken. Properties of the various pipes and bends used in the experiments are given in Table 15. The Pipe Line The general plan of the apparatus in several arrangements is shown in the accompanying diagrams, Fig. 4. In setting up the pipes a thin rubber gasket was placed between flanges. The gasket was cut slightly larger than the internal diameter of the pipe in order that no part of it might project into the interior of the pipe and restrict the waterway. This caused a slight enlargement at the...
