About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1872 edition. Excerpt: ...a spirit of triumph and pride, which could not fail to bring down God's anger upon him; and the evil that it was likely to bring upon Israel was so plainly dreaded even by Joab, who was not at all a man of tender conscience, that he said, "Now the Lord thy God add unto the people, how many soever they may be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it, but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?" No sooner, however, was the thing done than he was conscious of his sin, and it is said, " David's heart smote him." David received the message in a very becoming spirit, and said, "I am in a great strait; let us fall now into the hand of the Lord, for his mercies are great; and let me not fall into the hand of man." As the pestilence was sent, we may conclude that it was his desire, though it is not said so. And by this choice he showed that he was willing to take his share of the blame and the probable punishment; because, had the land been visited with famine, or the sword of the enemy, the king would have been the last to feel it; whereas a pestilence would probably strike the high as well as the low, and the monarch might have been its first victim.
