Excerpt: ...built inside water-tight timber caissons with removable sides, sunk on to the top of the foundation piles, which were cut off at a level of 22J feet below coping. Inclusive of filling in the ground at the back to a distance of 200 feet from the face, the wall cost 36 6s. per lineal foot. The quay is designed to support a load of 5 tons per square yard. The facing is of brickwork backed in the upper part by rubble masonry, and in the lower by concrete. Tie rods connect the wall with anchorage blocks at the rear.
