ANJOU, an ancient province of France, now forming the department of Maine-et-Loire, and parts of the departments of Indre-et-Loire, Mayenne, and Sarthe, with a total area of about 3000 square miles. The provinces that surrounded it formerly were Maine on the north, Bretagne on the west, Poitou on the south, and Touraine on the east. The capital was Angers, still the chief town of Maine-et-Loire. The noble river Loire divided the old province. The Andegavi are the earliest inhabitants of Anjou of whom we read. In 1060 the province passed into the hands of the house of Gatinais, of which sprang Godfrey V., who, in 1127, married Matilda, daughter of Henry I. of England, and so became the ancestor of the Plantagenet kings. Godfrey's son succeeded him as Count of Anjou in 1151, and in 1154, in right of his mother, ascended the throne of England as Henry II. Anjou remained in the possession of the English kings up to 1204, when John lost it to the French king Philip Augustus, who claimed it as a French fief for Prince Arthur, the nephew of John. In 1226 Louis VIII. bestowed this province on his brother Charles; but in 1828 Philip, a descendant of Charles and heir of this province, became king under the title of Philip VI., and reunited the province to the French crown. John L raised it to the rank of a ducal peerage, and gave it to his son Louis. Henceforth it remained separate from the French crown till 1480, when it fell to Louis XI. of France by will of King Rene. ANKARSTROM, Jan Jakob, the murderer of GuBtavus III., was born about 1762, and was at first a page in the Swedish court, afterwards an inferior officer in the regiment of body-guards, and later an ensign in the royal-guards.
