Karl August, Grandduke of Sachsen-Weimar, was born in 1758 and died in 1828. He was the patron of literature and science, and made Weimar the Athens of Germany. To his litde capital he attracted Goethe, Herder, Schiller, Wieland and many lesser lights. The young duke and Goethe indulged in all kinds of pranks and eccentricities in their young days. They went to the fires of the neighborhood. Vogelsberg and Grossneuhausen are little villages near Weimar.
