Excerpt: ...that weakening sentences and superfluous words are discarded, that sentences are placed in the best order in the paragraph, and paragraphs rearranged in the essay, that the final arrangement of words, sentences and paragraphs is such that the essential points stand out prominently so as to catch the eye and strike the mind of the reader; aim to have the power to express, keep pace with the power to think, so that the expression of each thought will do it justice and credit; aim this way and thus escape the error of trying to teach technical grammar to children. Observe that the first step is to lead children To Talk, also To Write. 4. After pupils have been thoroughly drilled in the correct use of language, and are old enough to understand the science of Grammar, parsing and the analysis of more difficult sentences may be taken up. In parsing, teach pupils that in order to know what part of speech a word is, they must first know the use of the word in the sentence. Here a closer study of the relation and meaning of words begins, and requires some power of analysis and judgment. If a pupil can determine the use, meaning, and relation of words, he has the most important part; the classification of words into parts of speech is often arbitrary and unimportant. Let pupils learn that the part of speech which a word is, depends somewhat on its etymology, but chiefly on its use in construction. Words of the same etymology may be used as different parts of speech, and just as native in the one as in the other. This is true of many adjectives and adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions, nouns and adjectives, and to some degree, of nearly all parts of speech.
