About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 edition. Excerpt: ...that the main reason is the silting over of the spawning beds in the river by the modern drainage system introduced into towns along the upper reaches. The habits of the striped bass may not be generally known and, therefore, it will not be out of place to say a few words about them. While, strictly speaking, not a hibernating fish, the striped bass winters in deep fresh water holes up the Hudson and other rivers. I have no doubt they can be caught in those holes all winter long, for I have been told that the late John G. Heckscher caught many throughout January and February in such a hole, near the Southside Club, in Great River, which runs into Great South Bay, east of Babylon. They work their way gradually up the rivers in fall and down again in spring. Hence the fishing there used to be in the Hudson autumnally and vernally. In lower latitudes, South Carolina, for example, while abounding in fresh and brackish waters, they seldom, if ever, go into the ocean. Above Riverdale the best places to get bass were about the lighthouse off Tarrytown and Croton Point, a few miles higher up. Some fish were taken, I am informed, about those places last fall and spring, but the catches were remarkable for neither number nor size of fish. Lower down, the fishing has been negligible for at least a decade. Occasional small fish have been taken along the Hudson front and in the Harlem, near Spuyten Duyvil, but the inducement has at no time been tempting. The decline of, .fishing in the Hudjfofi!' is undoubtedly due to. the increase, of. sewage in Re-baiting its water. The decline along the city front, for example, has been most rapid and remarkable since the extension of building to the..
