About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1844 edition. Excerpt: ... Supper is said, in the Church Catechism, to have been ordained for a "continual remembrance of the sacrifice of the death of Christ." It is he, who invites so many guests to receive the pledges of his love, to partake in the expiation of his sacrifice, to make their heavenly banquet upon that which is a communion of his body and blood. It is he who invites every sinner to come and lay down his burthen here at the foot of the cross; for, if he labours and is heavy laden with the weight of sins, here he shall find relief and rest. It is he who came by water and blood, the two tokens of atonement and purification inseparable, under the law, from expiatory sacrifice; for the victim and priest were sprinkled with water before the blood was shed; and water was sprinkled over all who had partaken of the sacrifice, again, when it had been completed. It is he, then, who commands us not only to be purified in the regeneration of grace by the waters of baptism, ...
