It was a small room, with a large teagle doorway open near to the gassing frame, and cowl ventilator in the roof above it. These were said to be always in use when gassing was going on, and that the conditions were much as I then found them. One large factory has an admirable arrangement. Exhaust openings are provided a little distance above the gas jets, and fresh air is admitted through gratings in the floor below the machines. The usual method, however, in this district appears to be that of general ventilation, and fans of great power change the air very frequently. This method, in my opinion, is not as good as the one of local application, as is evidenced by the greater discolouration of the limewash on walls and ceilings, with the larger accumulation of charred fibre dust thereon. Mr. Seal (Bradford').--Ventilation of gassing rooms, considering its difficulties, is on the whole good, with one notable exception, which, however, has had considerable attention, and is now under serious consideration for marked improvement. Steam in I visited a dye-works a short time ago where the hot-air injector was in use, with dye-houses, the most satisfactory results. Excessive steam in any works can, no doubt, be dealt with by this method. Mr. Hine (Leeds).--There are a number of dye-houses in and around Leeds, and in those parts where the boiling is done there is more or less steam, and in the majority no mechanical means have ever been adopted for carrying it away. They are always on the ground floor, and the roofs are provided with large louvre ventilators and other openings, and at most times the steam gets away fairly well.
