Cross-examined--I was in the office when the examination commenced; after the Committee met, Mr. Dodge, as is his custom, turned to the desk, and took from it the papers for which the Committee had met to look at; Alderman Denman spoke and said, "Mr. Dodge, what is there about the Tenth avenue sewer"?" without making any reply, Mr. Dodge presented him the paper; Alderman Barr remarked in this way: "Yes, that man must be paid." Alderman Denman made no further remark, that I recollect, except asking; who the surveyor was, and if he could be obtained; the remark of Alderman Barr was made before the paper was opened; I said to Mr. Craven, that I made up my mind, from the way Mr. Barr spoke, that the sewer would go through; Mr. Dodge told the Committee who the surveyor was; the surveyor and Street Commissioner did not come in together; the boy, Van Bent, was sent after Mr. Smith first; I think Mr. Dodge did not come in till after Mr. Smith had left; I think nothing was asked of Mr. Dodge, in relation to the character of the work; I was there the whole time; I don't know whether Mr. Pollock knew of the examination of the sewer; I am confident there was nothing said about the Delancey street b...
