Pupils should recognize readily at sight words and their divisions into syllables, as used in the First Reader; compound words and parts; contracted forms; possessive forms of words. Pupils should be required to give the number of the page, and the number and subject of each lesson, to give simple but intelligent defininitions. Pupils should be trained to cast the eyes from books to listeners, to look at the questioner and answer promptly. The work in reading should be frequently tested by having a recitation devoted to reading matter entirely new to pupils. Pupils of this grade can read at least the equal of three first readers in one year. VARIETY READING LESSONS. The following plan of recitation is excellent in first grade to maintain interest and keep the attention of pupils: 1. Concert reading. One naming pauses. 2. Individual reading. Class naming pauses. 3. Boys and girls alternate (boys calling a word and girls next). 4. Individuals read until a mistake occurs. 5. Dialogue reading (giving parts). 6. Voting for best reader. 7. Read to a pause. 8. For children who do not read readily, read backwards. 9. Teacher alternate with pupils. 10. Call careless pupils upon the floor to alternate with class. 11. Each read a sentence in reversed order. 12. Children read and criticise each other, giving reasons. 13. Teacher read and children criticise, etc. 14.
