The pressure-gear consists of a spring in the box / capable of being adjusted by means of the hand-wheel and screw s; the lower end of the spring rests on roller i in the short hand-lever h i, jointed to the long lever n m at n, and the upper lever p q r is connected at m by the tension rod o. The fulcrum of p q r is at q. The upper lever acts directly on the bearing of the upper roll and is transmitted downwards to the other roll. The hand-lever h i is for relaxing the pressure when required. The direction of the meal is similar to that shown in Fig. 3. The rolls are 800 mm. (llflong, the two outer 219 mm. (8") in diameter, the middle one 250 mm. (10") in diameter. The two outer rolls revolve at 130 revolutions per minute; the circumference speed of the middle roll is 4 per cent. greater. The leverage is in the proportion of 1 to 1?"5, and the pressure on each side is 1,400 kilos. (3,0fi6 lbs.), the power used from 2 to 3j horse-power, the turn-out 72 zollcentners (70 cwt.) Hi 24 hours. The lowest roll is driven by means of a pulley keyed on to the spindle; the other rolls are driven on both sides by spur-wheels. The bearings are like that shown in Fig. lb, and will be referred to again. Piute XV., Fig. 3, shows the Mechwart-Fischer double roller mill (the figure shows one half only in vertical section). Here the middle roll is in fixed bearings, and both the outer rolls are pressed on to the middle one by means of the spring f, their force being regulated by the screw x.
