The ratio of the velocities of the rays in-any-, part of the plate can be found by photographing the twtpspots, and measuring the distance between them, when. stationary in various positions on the plate. Experiments With an Air-Core Induction Coil. The air-core coil used in these experiments consisted of the secondary of a 12 in. coil, the usual primary and core of which were replaced by a coil of about 1,200 turns wound on a glass tube. The primary capacity was provided by paraffinpaper condensers connected directly to the terminals of the primary coil, so that the battery and rheostat were not included in the oscillatory portion of the circuit. Leyden jars served as secondary condensers, being connected to the terminals of the secondary coil in parallel with the oscillograph. The capacity of any one of the jars being very great in comparison with that of the coil, L12 may be regarded as equal to L21, each being the mutual inductance of the primary and secondary coils.
