The worst failures of pin-connections, where they had been put in for facility of erection, had occurred in Fink and other light trusses, which had been entirely abandoned. At the St. Louis Bridge, where the arches were launched forward as cantilevers from temporary Jlr. Matheson. towers, as in suspension-bridges, the effect of changes of temperature--not artificial but natural changes--had had to be dealt with in a way that was not referred to in the Paper. The halves of the arches were held back by suspension-chains passing over the towers, and in frosty weather severe stresses were put on the cables, and some of them broke. Accordingly the towers were supported on hydraulic rams, and as the temperature varied the man on watch had to pump np or down, according to his reading of the thermometer. One method of erection largely used in cold countries such as Russia, Scandinavia, and Canada was by temporary staging on ice. So many of the original timber bridges on the St. Petersburg-Moscow Railway had been destroyed by fire that they had now all been replaced by iron structures. In times of famine and distress the peasants formerly burned a bridge occasionally, with the object of obtaining employment; and that was found to be somewhat expensive. In substituting iron girders the old wooden bridge formed a convenient temporary structure during rebuilding.
