They were too near their own workmen in degree to be able to despise the thing as a trifle. Reuben Taxel's sin in arousing insubordination and dissatisfaction against "the firm" was as nothing in comparison with those foolish, clever, biting words which held up to ridicule their own weaknesses. Reuben must go; and his sister, who had always carried herself " uppishly," had better be off also. Trade was falling: shorter orders and shorter hours were the present aspect of the business; a "hand" ...
