Steam was never used to any great extent, although in Germany street Rail Roads so operated were a familiar sight a few years ago, 'buses of tbe kind used in Glasgow being attached to the engine. There are only about 175 miles of steam-operated street Rail Ways in the United States to-day. The street car systems of our great cities carry approximately 5,000,000,000 passengers annually, six times as many as the Rail Roads, although the average Rail Road journey is much longer than the street car ride. As our cities expanded, distances to be covered The Elevated, grew and time became more precious, we put our tracks up in the air to avoid other traffic and street crossings, thus creating "rapid transit," by means of elevated Rail Roads. But these also became overcrowded, and so we have begun to burrow into the earth and under the streets with our subways. These last are but in their infancy. London led with her "underground." Paris followed, and America, in a number of places, has begun to adopt this latest method of cheating time. Under The River, 1910. New York City's subway carries 268,000,000 and The Subway. her elevated systems transport 293,000,000 passengers a year. During the Hudson-Fulton celebration the subways and elevated roads of the city carried a daily average of over 1,890,000 paying passengers for eight consecutive days, besides tens of thousands of the city's guests who rode free of charge.
