Not illustrated. 1907 Excerpt: ...as the concrete decreases until it measures four and onehalf feet on each side of the hearth. This thickness is maintained for about five feet, above which the lining measures two feet, three inches, which is the average for the bo3h and as far up as the stack, a distance of over twenty feet. Prom here up, which constitutes the stack, the lining is composed of two grades of brick. The space A shown in diagram varies from four feet, six inches at the crucible line or top of the bosh to four feet, three inches at the top and is composed of Anglo-Saxon and Benezeti brick. The Anglo-Saxon brick are thirteen and one-half by four and onehalf by two inches in size and sot in front while the Benezeti brick, size eight by four by two and one-half inches are placed back of them. Every fifteen inches, abrasive plates are placed between the layers of brick. These plates are shaped to fit the curvature of th'e furnace and are six feet in length, two feet, six inches wide, and four inches thick. By inserting these, the bricks are held in place longer, after the eating action begins. Where a very high refractory brick is required the "Kentucky Steel" brick made in Portsmouth, Ohio, Is used. The space C (shown in diagram) is filled with some material which will allow for expansion and contraction of the shell as its temperature varies. Usually this substance is a granulated cinder, made by running a stream of water through hot furnace slag. The expansion space C is six inches wide, and runs from the supporting columns to the. top of the stack. The outside shell D, is made of iron plate, double rivited, and three-eighths inches in thickness.
