Such plotting must be stopped, and therefore Danilo was spirited away, and I, when it appeared that I did not intend to go peacefully home, was securely lodged in Pevna. Now that we were safe Cecilie had been taken home. We could at least do no harm now until after the wedding, and after that we should be welcome to do our worst. I thought I understood the situation pretty well. The hours of that afternoon and evening dragged on leaden feet. I played piquet with Captain Herpics until I hated the very look of a card. I paced the gravel path in the garden, smoking cigarettes, and studying the geography of the window at which I was to stand that night. I could see no method of escape from there.
