Not illustrated. 1873 Excerpt: ...about 20"-05 per annum. Consequently, allowing for the size of this circle on the sphere, it will be found that it will take the pole 31,840 years to move round this circle. During 7960 years, or one-fourth of the period, the pole will move over one-fourth of the circle, that is, from c to A. If, then, the pole be at A at the date 2298 A.d., then 7960 years previously it was at c, that is, at the date about 5660 B.C. At the date 5660 B.C. the angular distance E c would be about 29, which would represent the value of the obliquity at that date. D would be the position of the pole 15,800 years from the date 2298 A.d., that is, at the date COURSE OF THE POLE OF THE HEAVENS. 165 13,502 B.C., when the obliquity would be greatest, viz. 35 25' 47," which is the angular distance of D the pole of the heavens from E the pole of the ecliptic at that date. When the pole was at D the alternations of climate would be greatest, and the Great Boulder period was at its height, the forces at work were then very powerful, as already described; the intense cold of winter in middle latitudes and the great heat of summer being most distinctly marked. F shows the position of the pole when two-thirds of the circle has been traced, and when we reach a date about 21,000 years from 2298 A.d., that is, to the period of about 19,000 B.c. The pole then was again about 29i from E, and the obliquity also 29. With an obliquity of 29 the alternations between summer and winter in middle latitudes would be much greater than at present, and at this date the earth would have been gliding into its glacial epoch. It would reach its height when the pole was at D, and be gliding out of it when it reached c. Thus the conditions, as regards climate, would be suitable to produce all the obse...
