We had charge of his candidacy in the upper peninsula, and actually gave him here the votes which decided the primaries in his favor. It was done against the "old guard," many of whom have hurried into the Sleeper wagon to start again at the bottom of the ladder. I am a member of the governor's "kitchen cabinet" and am very fond of Uncle Bert. I know the feeling of his intimate political friends. I hoped that the governor would actively stand with your candidacy, not with an idea of dictating who should be Senator, but with the common sense idea of standing openly with the man he thought best fitted to represent this State in the Senate. He now feels that the governor should stand aside. Possibly this is a good idea, with so many candidates suggested. But it must be on the square, a real neutrality, as I have no doubt it will be, knowing Gov. Sleeper as I do. But for me, and for very many of the men who did so much for Sleeper, there is the unquestioned privilege of lining up on the sanatorship where we pleaee. 1 have the pleasure and honor of saying to you that I desire to enlist with you for the whole race to success, and offer my frank opinion that the news of your candidacy will be welcome to a very large number of men who were the best friends the governor had last year. It hag been said to me that an objection to your candidacy lay in the fact that you were a man of wealth. 1 believe, Mr. Newberry, that snobbery of this sort is a dead issue in American politics, and that voters to-day are much more interested in what a man is than in what he has, much or little. You have shown an unselfish Americanism and a willingness to serve your country where it needed you, either before the mast or up above. 1 ...
