He who nurses an apple orchard or especially a pear orchard from infancy to full stature has passed through the woe and tribulation incident to blight. Well what did he suggest as the proper remedy? Surgery, bless his dear old innocent Alopathic heart. Cold steel in one hand and a bottle of some antiseptic to sterilize the instrument after each cut. Nearly a decade ago at the annual meeting of the Southeastern Iowa Horticultural Society, I had something to say on the subject under consideration, and as it is just as pertinent now as it was then, please permit me to reproduce it phonographically, as it were. The cause and nature of the blight has been a subject of much controversy. Some contend that it is a "miasmatic" mist or exhalation rising from the soil. Others claim that it is a germ disease. The latter view is the one held by scientists generally. A specific remedy has absolutely eluded all research in vegetable pathology. The one thing that science has apparently clearly demonstrated is that the spray or any other outward application is wholly inefficient. Now I have a pet theory in regard to combatting this disease called blight which I wish to set forth, but before I do so, let me give a few definitions and explanations.
