Extensive mills for the manufacture of giant powder have been established in the heart of this paradise, thirty miles from the city. At another point, 1,000 acres have been bought by a stockyard syndicate, and more than twice as many more thereabouts have been purchased by real-estate sharks and staked out into lots to sell to the unwary. In fact, most of this swampy wilderness, within thirty miles of Chicago, is going the same way. Oa one of my botanical trips into this region, a year ago last summer, to the vicinity of a little Indiana hamlet of most forlorn appearance, called, as if in sarcasm, East Chicago, I came to the intersection of two streets hewn straight through the wilderness across sloughs and sand dunes; it was a good two miles from any house. I was not especially surprised at the streets, for the whole country thereabouts was intersected by such streets, which nobody but hunters ar.d botanists ever traveled. But I was surprised to find at this street intersection an elaborate and expensive iron fountain. Of course, there was no water in it; nor was there need of any, for sloughs were everywhere. I was curious to know the history and purpose of such a useless fountain, and so made inquiries on my return to the village. The facts as related to me were as follows: A Chicago real-estate man had purchased a large tract here and subdivided it.
