I'll go and see; Perhaps there's some relief for me. Servant! servant! bring out my hoss; Perchance I can the funeral boss. I'll go and try, at any rate, And maybe seal the parson's fate; For all will know I've got him down, If I can only sneak around And get consent without a doubt To wholly knock the parson out Of anything he wants to say Before the dead is laid away." So on he goes, with friend at side, To reach the place where some one died. When there, he enters private room To seal the parson's final doom, And makes his plans all on the sly To pass the little parson by And have a great and joyous day By running things his own sweet way. He drums around to get a crowd To sing his praises long and loud, When, like a lion in his lurch, He drives the parson from his church. Alas! alas! his plans all fail, And like a cur he tucks his tail; He sneaks away with angry frown, Because the parson will not down. Now that the thing has passed away, The wonder is, from day to day, Why the boss did not attend The lonely bedside of his friend, To offer prayers for his relief, Or to assuage the widow's grief, Or at least to spend the night While the sick was in such plight. He needed some one by his bed Some weeks before his weary head Bowed low in death, gave up the ghost, And spirit went to join the host Of friends long gone to worlds above, Where all is joy, peace, and love.
