But Beza, in his Notes upon the Place, makes still more free with him, saying, Nolui imitari Castellionis Audaciam, qui novo Vocabulo Lapidipavium est interpretatus. See John, Chap. xix. ver. 13. Lecturio, I donotfind this Verb in the Classics, tho' it has got a Place in some of our Dictionaries. Rav. Textor also uses it in his third Epistle. uod lecturiant omnes. Lepidulus, Sebast. Castellio, copying other Authors of Barbarism, that lived Jong before him, makes use of this fanciful Epithet. Vulticulum habes lepidulum. Cant. Canticor. Chap. ii. ver. 14. Literalis, This Word is not to be found in any ancient Roman Writer; d Sensu literali parum detortae. Trapp's Pr lefl. Poet. Vol. I. p. 241. Longiuscule, I wonder so accurate a Writer as Buchanan should adopt this Adverb, without any apparent Necessity. It is probable he was induced thereto by Analogy. 'But as the Latin is a dead Language, the securest way of writing it is to depend upon Authority. See his Rerum Scot. Lib. V. cap. 26. LUCER Lucernula, I know of no ancienter Writer than Jerom, that uses this Diminutive. Cowley, in his Lib. Plant. pag. 101. has this Line. Exhaereddjfet moriente Lucernula flammd. Lusorie, This Adverb belongs to the Writers in the Decline of the Roman Empire. Milton is one of the Latinists of later Date, that has again adopted it. See his Defens. pro Pop. Angl. p. 20. M.
